The Science Division of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), California Institute of Technology invites applications for a scientist position in support of NASA's Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite mission (http://swot.jpl.nasa.gov). The SWOT mission will use high-resolution wide-swath altimetry technology as a means of completely covering the world's oceans and freshwater bodies with repeated elevation measurements. SWOT will revolutionize our understanding of the oceanic circulation at mesoscales and submesoscales as well as the global dynamics of terrestrial surface waters and their interactions with coastal oceans in estuaries. Will be a member of the Climate, Oceans & Solid Earth Science Section (329) and will report to the Group Supervisor of the Oceans and Ice Group (329D). Will work under the guidance of the SWOT Project Scientist to provide support on mission-related scientific problems through data analysis, ocean modeling, and data assimilation. Will be responsible for supporting the following specific areas:

  • High-level data product development: Develop a technique to produce space-time gridded high-level data products from SWOT's measurement of sea surface height.
  • Ocean simulations: Conduct high-resolution ocean general circulation model (OGCM) simulation focusing on mesoscale and submesoscale processes in both the open oceans and coastal environment.
  • Data assimilation of simulated SWOT data: Conduct data assimilation experiments with OGCM assimilating simulated SWOT data with realistic sampling patterns and measurement errors. The objectives are to understand the characteristics of SWOT data and the feasibility of reconstruction of synoptic variability at mesoscale and submesoscale.
  • AirSWOT support - modeling and data analysis: Conduct simulation experiments for the preparation of AirSWOT ocean experiments and analyze data collected.Qualifications:
    Required Skills:
    • PhD degree in Oceanography or related scientific or technical discipline.
    • Demonstrated working knowledge of the forefront of ocean dynamics, preferably on oceanic mesoscale and submesoscale processes.
    • Experience with either ocean general circulation modeling or observational analysis of the above noted processes.
    • Peer-reviewed publications in this field.
    • Understanding of the principles and techniques of ocean data assimilation.
    • Experience in using satellite and in situ data for studying ocean eddies and submesoscale processes.
    • Advanced knowledge of applicable industry and/or academic practices and standards in Oceanographic and Atmospheric research.Desired Skills:
      • 2 years of related experience beyond PhD.
      • Experience with statistical methods.
      • Experience with advanced data assimilation methods.
